SOUTH BEND, Ind. Illegal sale of alcohol at a South Bend Speedway prompted an investigation that led to 109 of the convenience stores being cited.

The investigation began on December 26 when excise police received an anonymous tip that the Speedway at 1706 South Bend Avenue had sold beer on Christmas Day.

When an officer arrived to investigate, a clerk who worked at a different Speedway said her store had also sold alcohol on Christmas Day.

A total of 109 stores were identified as having sold alcohol on the holiday, five of which are in South Bend.

Indiana law prohibits the sale of alcoholic beverages from 7 a.m. on December 25 until 3 a.m. on December 26.

Speedway’s corporate office in Enon, Ohio, has cooperated throughout this investigation, police said.
