Nappanee officials hope that the city will qualify for federal disaster aid following a tornado that damaged hundreds of homes and businesses last week.
Work continues on cleaning up from the storm that officials say left 199 homes and 53 businesses either damaged or destroyed in the city. Crews with heavy machinery are removing the remains of homes blown apart by the Thursday night storm.
Mayor Larry Thompson says residents could know as early as next week whether Nappanee will received federal assistance.
A state of emergency order was lifted last night.
