When Notre Dame took the field Saturday, it was special--not just because Brian Kelly was leading the charge for the first time or Dayne Crist was making taking the reigns as the Irish quarterback--but because Penn high grad Braxston Cave was running out of the tunnel as the starting center at Notre Dame for the very first time.
“It was totally awesome. Everything I dreamed of has come true. He played great, the team looked good,” said Braxston's dad Rick.
In fact, Braxston's name was never mentioned in the press box or in the 25 minute press conference with Brian Kelly. For a center, that's a very good sign.
“When you’re on the o-line and your name gets called, you’ve done something wrong, so I like to keep my name down low," Braxston explained after the game live on NewsCenter 16's post-game coverage.
“It’s been awesome, definitely a dream come true. We got the ‘W’ and that’s what was most important,” said Braxston.
Now a junior, Cave just found out last week he would get the start over former starting center Dan Wenger.
“It was awesome," Braxston's mom Kim said after giving her son a huge hug after the game. "I mean, today was an awesome day. Words can’t describe how we feel as parents today."
And what made it truly special--Notre Dame came away with the win.
“The biggest thing I can say is that I think we were very, very prepared," Braxston explained.
"It was tough. Coming into it, I thought that things were going to be a lot different than they were. Things were a little slower than what they are in prep. The speed of the game is different, but overall, as o-line, I think we did a great job today.”
