Funeral held for John Floyd

A retired South Bend police officer was laid to rest this afternoon. A funeral was held on Friday for 66-year-old john Floyd.

He was killed last week after a huge house explosion in St. Joseph County.

Hundreds gathered at Linc Church on South Bend's south side to say good-bye to Floyd.

He retired from the South Bend police department last year, after working on the force for almost 36 years. Floyd was also a school security officer for South Bend schools.

Students who wanted to pay their respects during the service were bused over from Washington High School, which is where Floyd last worked.

“I wanted to come to show my respect for my Floyd. He has always been nice to me, and always nice to students. [He was] very respectful and I wanted to show my respect for him,” said Breyona Swanson, a student from Washington High School.

Floyd’s body will eventually be buried in the “heroes” section at Southlawn Cemetery when it is completed.
