A 17-year-old Mishawaka High School student was arrested Friday for alleged criminal deviant conduct and battery. The arrest comes a day after another student filed a police report saying he was molested in a school shower.
"My daughter as soon as I got home from work she said 'mom, boy do I have a lot to tell you' and I was shocked. Absolutely shocked, but it's a crazy world out there so you never know," said Paige Bultinck, a parent of a Mishawaka High School student.
Sources tell NewsCenter 16 the student said he was victimized by five team mates on the school's wrestling team nearly two years ago in January 2010. Sources said the investigation began this week when a friend of the alleged victim went to school officials concerned about the victim's well-being.
School City of Mishawaka said very little about the investigation. However, Superintendent Terry Barker confirmed a faculty member was suspended while the investigation continues. Sources tell NewsCenter 16 a faculty meeting was held Friday afternoon to address the situation and Wrestling Coach Darrick Snyder was not at the meeting. Friday's wrestling match was also cancelled.
"As for Coach Snyder, He was a very good guy. I grew up here, I knew him all four years as my government teacher. I back him 110 percent here. I really don't believe any of this, that if it was to happen that he would report it. He’s a very good guy and his wrestling program is known just for what it does," said Tyler Kocsis, a graduate of Mishawaka High School.
Mishawaka's wrestling team is most recently known for their state championship victory in 2010, its second in three years.
The 17-year-old arrested Friday night is currently in the St. Joseph County Juvenile Justice Center. The case is being forwarded to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office, which will determine formal charges on Monday.
"I just would like the truth. There’s always so many stories that get out there that are fabricated and I would just like to know the truth and what's going on and what's going to be done about it," said Bultinck. "It's made us think twice about maybe sending her to a different school, but I know things happen everywhere so it's kind of sad you don't know. You think your child is safe when they're in school, but anymore you just don't know."
Mishawaka Police and the St Joseph County Special Victim's Unit continue to investigate.
