There's new evidence that the prevalence of obesity in America may have leveled-off. It's still going to take a lot of work to reverse the trend.
It's a big problem that experts say can be tackled with little steps, starting today.
These are a few ways Americans are losing weight, possibly stabilizing our obesity problem.
Howard Eisenson, M.D., Duke Diet and Fitness Center, explains one easy way to stay active, "If we spend less time in sedentary pursuits, even walking, doing household chores, enjoying social time with friends. On the move, it helps."
Dr. Howard Eisenson of the Duke Diet and Fitness Center at Duke University is reacting to the latest numbers on obesity from the centers for disease control.
Not much has changed in the past decade. Nearly 70-percent of adults in this country are overweight, 1 in 3 are obese. About half that many kids and teens are considered obese.
Experts say we adults could do a better job modeling healthy eating and exercise habits.
Dr. Eisenson, M.D., explains how the young kids watch adults, "Those little guys watch us to learn what to do. And they watch us more than they listen to us."
While the scale has held steady for a majority of Americans, there were notable elevations of obesity in men, boys, and African American and Mexican American women.
There's no indication of the reasons behind those increases. Changing America’s mentality of "bigger is better" could get us moving in the right direction.
Dr. Eisenson, M.D., explains how we think when we go into fast food restaurants, "Why isn't it assumed when we go into a restaurant or a fast food place that what we probably want is water? Why isn't it assumed that what we want is the small size serving?"
Small changes that just might bring the stats, and the numbers on your scale, back down.
These new statistics on obesity are based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
