Most of us have a part of our bodies that we would not mind changing, an area that just does not respond to diet or exercise.

What if we told you there is laser technology that can get rid of your fat, and it will not come back?

There are some ladies out there who know the feeling, especially those of us who have had children.

We watch our diets and do our sit-ups and still have those "mommy pooches" or love handles that make our clothes a little uncomfortable.

There is a procedure that has been used in Europe for a decade and after FDA approval two years ago has been sweeping the country.

Michelle Patino is a married mother of five.

Just ten days ago she underwent smart lipo, which is laser-assisted liposuction.

The full result will take six months, but Michelle already sees a big change.

"Before I could pinch, I could grab and hold, and now I have to work at it. I can't do that anymore." She said, speaking of her "love handles".

There are three steps to this procedure, and the first step is to infiltrate some fluid with some numbing medication.

Prior to the infiltration Michelle was given the anti anxiety drug, Xanax and Tylenol with hydrocordone. Six tiny incisions are made.

Dr. Christopher Peers has performed smart lipo on hundreds of women in his Goshen office, and points out it is quicker and safer than traditional lipo.

"Traditional liposuction is relatively brutal. It's often done with a general anesthetic so people are asleep for it," he explained.

"It's relatively traumatic because it sucks out and it pulls and tears the fat from underneath the skin," he added.

With smart lipo, Dr. Peers spends about 40 to 60 minutes filling Michelle's abdomen with a saline-lydocaine solution and, while relaxed, she is lucid enough to talk.

While Dr. Peers is working on Michelle's belly and love handles, he says there are many uses for smart lipo, "Pretty much wherever there is fat you don't want. The areas that we've work on include the neck, to redefine the neck line." He added, "around the bra, the fat area here or the back under the bra area. Love handles, certainly the tummy is by far the most popular."

Now that her belly area is infiltrated, we all put on special glasses before Dr. Peers fires up the laser, which he activates with a foot pedal.

"It's very gentle and you literally use a little fiber the size of a strand of angel hair pasta and that fiber carries the beam that melts the fat, it's like melted butter," Dr. Peers says.

The laser used to break up the fat barely makes a sound. Dr. Peers will spend about an hour breaking up the fat.

"We go in and we fan like this and then we go up to this area and we fan like that," The doctor explains.

And because the fat is suctioned out, it does not come back.

"You get a much better result if you can suction the fat away because otherwise it is going to redistribute itself somewhere."

And because patients are awake, Dr. Peers says some are very involved in the procedure.

"Some people are intent on watching their fat go through the tubing and they'll go, 'wow, look at all those cheeseburgers going by.'"

After three hours from start to finish, Michelle is ready to go home.

Also feeling good these days is Becky Lowe. She had smart lipo five months ago.

"I felt amazing. I actually went to dinner that evening," says Becky.

Dr. Peers says men are also candidates for smart lipo, but nine out of ten patients is a woman.

Dr. Peers performed laser lipo on me and did a wonderful job. He is very gentle and throughout the whole procedure makes sure that you are completely comfortable. I would recommend him to anyone. I know several ppl that have went to him and are very happy with their results. The best thing is it is not like an ordinary plastic surgery. I was talking on my cell phone while under going surgery!!

I'm guessing that as an Ear, Nose, Throat specialist he will not do things like breast augs, tummy tucks, etc. but he might do like facelifts or nose jobs since those are done in areas he is acquainted with. I was kind of surprised that he decided to do liposuction, honestly, given his background. Boy, the things you can do once you attend a workshop...

Thank you JD. He did a wonderful job on my son, too. Thanks to him my son can hear. That was 15 years ago and counting.

Apparently the smartlipo site needs updating because all three plastic surgeons at The Centre, PC, do Smartlipo. And yes, Deb, it is the same ENT Dr. Peers, but I hear he does a wonderful job.

I went to the Big Red bar and clicked on the link and in looking over the site, I noticed that it said there were no Smartlipo surgeons in Indiana. Is this the same Dr. Peers who treated my son as an ENT specialist?

Yes, and Dr. Schulman is also leaving for Florida at end of this year, so if you want a woman, you'd better get in soon.

There is a female "board certified plastic surgeon" whom is located in South Bend, Indiana. Dr. Alissa Shulman is currently located at the Plastic Surgery Center and she takes great delight in body shaping and body contouring in regard to lipo techniques.

Having watched the Smartlipo piece, it's clear this procedure is done in an office setting rather than an operating room. That seems much better than being put to sleep, however my concern would be whether the staff are prepared to deal with adverse reactions to the infiltrate, which contains medication that can affect the heart. Also, one of Dr. Peers' ads states he has 25 years experience, but is that experience in liposuction and other cosmetic procedures or some other specialty? Research will tell you that Smartlipo is most effective for smaller areas. For larger areas, it works best in conjunction with the Vaser technique, as was mentioned by Elizabeth.

I had a friend who had smart lipo done and could barely tell a difference. She ended up having to go to another doctor who offered Vaser lipo to get the results she wanted. The doctor told her that laser lipo is all hype. I am now considering having Vaser done.

My wife has had cosmetic surgery and we believe it is extremely important to have these procedures performed by a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. Goshen doesn't have any, however Elkhart has three.

Just make sure the surgeon is board certified and validate her/his medical licenses. In addition, check to see if there is any pending malpractice suits and see if she/he come recommended by other physicians.

I agree with N. Could we get some prices on this procedure. As the mother of four, I have a tummy that just won't go away no matter what. Do they also do thighs and behinds? Mine could use some work after 2 of my kids weighed in at 9 lbs or more.

Could we get some price quotes on this type of surgery? I've been a member of a gym for years and now matter how much I work out, whether its 3 days a week or 5, I still have a gut. I never thought I would resort to surgery to get rid of my gut but I literally cant seem to burn fat off of my body. I've revamped my diet numerous times....this may be the best option for me. I could have the surgery, and continue going to the gym, this time to tone and shape my body, not try to get rid of fat that wont leave. I have excellent insurance and just want to know what it might cost to have this done.
