The New York Police Department's commissioner is on a mission to Haiti to meet with leaders to discuss American support for rebuilding the earthquake-ravaged Caribbean nation's security forces.

Commissioner Raymond Kelly departed Monday for Port-au-Prince for a series of daylong meetings sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. The meetings are expected to lay the groundwork for placing six Creole-speaking NYPD officers in the country to help train Haitians.

Kelly says in a phone interview from Haiti security is major concern following January's devastating earthquake because hundreds of thousands of people are sleeping in camps.

Kelly is expected to meet with Haiti's president and the director general of the national police.
