City officials in St. Clair are applying for grants for installation of two charging stations for electric car batteries.
The Times Herald of Port Huron reports the stations would be downtown and cost about $16,000.
City Superintendent Scott Adkins says the closest charging stations are in neighboring Macomb County. St. Clair is about 45 miles northeast of Detroit.
Adkins says St. Clair should get some type of response to its grant request within the month.
Western Michigan University earlier this year installed four public charging units for electric and hybrid-electric vehicles on its Kalamazoo campus. Those units are part of a statewide network geared toward what is expected to be a growing number of electric vehicle owners.
