The Nature Conservancy has installed three power-generating wind turbines at its ecologically friendly state headquarters in Indianapolis.

The Indiana Business Journal reports (http://bit.ly/qqRhnB ) that the three vertical-axis turbines might not generate more than about 8,000 kilowatt hours of electricity a year. That's about 3 percent of the total annual electric use at the $5.7 million downtown building known as the Efroymson Conservation Center.

Operations director Adam McLane says the turbines are about education as well as energy. The conservancy conducts frequent tours to demonstrate the environmentally friendly features of the building.

The building has a number of other green features, including passive solar lighting and a 2,500-gallon tank in the basement to store rainwater drained from the roof, for use in toilets and
irrigation.
