Michigan State University is taking part in the 2011 "RecycleMania" competition, in which colleges and universities try to see who can collect the largest amounts of recyclables.

About 600 schools nationwide are registered for the competition, which started Sunday and runs through April 2.

Last year's champion was Harvard University, which collected 996,760 pounds of recycled material.

The MSU Recycling Center is heading the school's effort, with help from the Office of Campus Sustainability, Physical Plant, and Residential and Hospitality Services.
