Hummer maker AM General is going green, expanding into the electric vehicle business.

The Mishawaka-based company will be responsible for final assembly of Ford Motor Co.'s electric Transit Connect commercial vans, which will go on sale next spring.

Michigan-based Azure Dynamics made the announcement Tuesday. Azure is making the electric drivetrain system for the Transit Connect.

Ford plans to ship engine-less Transit Connects from its factory in Turkey to an AM General facility in Livonia, Michigan, where workers will install the electric system.

Ford says the electric Transit Connect will be able to go 80 miles on a single charge.
