The City of Goshen just got a little greener despite the winter weather. Monday was the first day for five 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid SUVs.

The city is replacing a number of old cars. One of the perks is the city didn't pay full price for the new vehicles.

MACOG purchased the cars through the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality funds for a fraction of their $32,000 retail value.

The city paid an initial $1,126 and will pay an additional $1 on top of the initial price for five years.

“There are two factors at play, one is the decreasing revenues to cities. We have to continue to look for savings. But also gasoline is costing more this year than it was last year so it's kind of hitting us from both directions,” Goshen Mayor Allan Kauffman said

“We’re always trying to figure out ways to make our cities greener, and this is one way that we can do that,” Kauffman added.

The cars are expected to save the city an estimated $4,000 per year in gas.
