Michigan State University is holding a ceremony to mark the opening of its $13 million Surplus Store and Recycling Center.
President Lou Anna Simon and others are set to speak at the event, which starts at 9 a.m. Thursday. Visitors may tour the facility afterward.
The East Lansing school says the 74,000-square-foot facility triples the space of the previous recycling center and lets it expand its waste collection efforts in 553 campus buildings. The center targets white paper, mixed office paper, newspaper, cardboard and plastics.
Michigan State says rain collection tanks on the roof will provide water for toilets, urinals and power washers, and rooftop solar panels will produce 10 percent of the building's electricity.
