Nov 12, 2009 - Take Charge Thursday: Volunteering The Salvation Army has many different programs that need volunteers this year. Their bell-ringers can volunteer for shifts as short as two hours, anytime from Nov 12th – Dec. 24th. You can also help run their toy shop Dec. 16th-17th, in which families go through the building to pick out toys for their children. They also need volunteers and donations for their Adopt-A-Family program, and Food and Gift Delivery Program for seniors. Finally, the Salvation Army also needs volunteer screeners to help handle the applications from area families for the above mentioned programs. They take donations from 8:30-12:30 and 1:30-4:30 between Nov. 9th – Nov. 24th. If you’re interested in volunteering for the Salvation Army in any of these capacities, call Liz Kurtz at (574) 233-9471 extension 103, or email Liz_Kurtz@usc.salvationarmy.org. Meals on Wheels provides hot meals to the homebound five days a week, and also is in need of more volunteers. This entails delivering meals in your own vehicle for about an hour on a designated day. You are given a small stipend for gas money, but they stress it is not enough to cover your time and expenses; you are donating your time and some money. You can volunteer for Meals on Wheels or any number of other programs at Real Services by calling (574) 256-1649 or (574) 284-7138. RTS Computers in Elkhart is in need of old computers to be recycled into new homes as part of the 12 Days of Christmas Program. RTS can pick up the computers from your home, and ensures that the hard drives will be erased before they are refurbished, reprogrammed, and delivered to those in need for free. Right now people in need are being put on a waiting list, because there is a shortage of machines to be re-furbished. To contact RTS call (574) 970-3036.
