Why are people picking on teachers? It seems to me that the number of such instances involving adults and our kids have involved COACHES. Let's do a better job of checking their backgrounds and doing drug testing (pre, random, also able suspicion and post accident). Also check to see if they are or have been seeing a professional for any type of mental evaluations or counseling. These adults spend a lot of time with our kids without the safety net of other adults close by to help observe.

The comments against public education in response to this article are pitiful. Those who bash public education should be ashamed. We have public education to allow our population a chance to better themselves. Anyone with a bit of common sense knows the teachers, schools, principals, whatever label you place on them, are not making machines that either work or don't. The mindset that our schools are failing because of teachers, or anyone that works at a school, are just ignorant. Moreover, private schools appear to look "good" as they have NO state testing restrictions or demands, and they usually have clients with strong family support, and often, money, backing them. However, they pay their often non-licensed teachers horribly. Shame on all those who would further any agenda to divide populations of people to the "haves" and "have nots."

I say dump the public school system. It has failed. Just look at the grades and graduation rates. I don't care who is at fault. The system is a complete and utter failure. 90% of the teachers are in it for pensions and benefits and hide behind the union bosses. On one hand, they say they care and on the other they say they can't do much about it. Doesn't that sound like a hopeless situation? It's time to junk the current system. No ifs, ands, or butts. Most public school teachers should do the right thing and resign. The taxpayers can no longer afford you.

Probably just another nog gaming the system, hoping nobody would look.

Clay High School. Do not wait another moment, start the process to become a Private Performing Arts School. Enough already-enough.

Just watched WSBT's news and BOY is SBCSC setting themselves up! If they are hanging dismissal on his failure to tell them about a CIVIL case he lost 18-20 years ago then he will sue for back pay and win. I have never seen an employment application that asked about civil cases against you, only criminal charges that you were convicted of. Unless there are other discrepancies on his application he probably was as truthful as required. People are jumping to judgement without knowing the facts and/or the law.

Right you are! Civil just means they could not prove it.

Civil can also mean that you settled because you couldn't afford to hire a lawyer to fight it.

Indiana is an employ "at will state," so no reason for termination is required.

This is true BUT they have already supplied reason and it will not be valid unless there is more we do not know. In this case the reason will become the lawsuit.

A para-professional for gym????? No wonder our schools are broke. Quit inflating staff positions. Looks like the Indiana Dept. of Ed was right when they said we spend too much on support staff.

1 gym teacher to supervise 30 kids is not a good idea...hence the need for an aide.

Para-pros for gym are generally assigned to work with physically and mentally handicapped students. They are required by law, due to mainstreaming.

How did this become about teachers? I wish the public would get a clue about what teachers handle on a daily basis before speaking out of ignorance. Do you hear about the good teachers? No, that is not newsworthy. Stop basing your opinions on one sided media. It is not the intelligent thing to do.

If there are only a few teachers left in the school system who care, then the rest are brining the system down. Tim's right. Go private school all the way.

Come on people this story isn't about the quality of teachers. This is about the lack of oversight in the hiring process. Who is this 3rd party group who does background checks and who in the administration checks the results? I hope they have a valid issue with the application being false as his civil case will not exempt him from employment. A Corporation cannot absolve themselves of responsibility by hiring another group to do what they have a legal obligation to do. This, if true, is the 2nd or 3rd instance I have heard regarding SBCSC, Penn had one as did Mishawaka (there they couldn't even verify accurately their Superintendent's. application)

His past history would NOT appear on a criminal background check. It was civil action. Anyone can check the national sex offender registry(just google it)...his name is NOT there.

I understand and agree, but please note I did not say 'criminal' and I allowed that a civil case was NOT a dis-qualifier. Media has brought this up(a tip perhaps?)and SBCSC responded. In their haste to do something they have suspended without pay and cited application as being inaccurate.

Not entirely true Tim. I have worked alongside numerous SBCSC teachers and administrators for a number of years and there are still a few in our public schools that are dedicated to giving the children of our community the best education that they can offer. I will not argue that ALL SBCSC teachers have that same passion but there are still some out there that are teachers for the right reasons.

I would like to remind people that there are many good teachers out there that put their heart and soul in their jobs. They are real compassion for their students and give 110% everyday to their students. Remember the good teachers.

None work for sbcsc. The teachers at sbcsc are only concerned with union rights, wages, and retirement. Try private schools if you want teachers that care.

It's not ALL of the teachers, it's the parents also. Yes, try the Private schools who do not teach our children with special needs or behavior problems. They just boot them out, and back to the public school. This is well known!
