An investigation by an Evansville newspaper shows many of Indiana’s School Superintendents are receiving more compensation than reported in their contracts.
There are nearly 300 superintendents in the Hoosier state, and the Evansville Courier and Press found that many boards are keeping published salaries low, by providing the full cost of health insurance in cash, and offering extra money for retirement accounts.
The practice is legal, and falls within the Indiana State Teachers Retirement Fund Guidelines, but some legislators now say the practice abuses the intent of the retirement system.
