Purdue replacing old air fleet with 17 new planes

Purdue University has almost completely replaced its old aviation school fleet.

Officials plan to buy four Cirrus SR20 planes at an air show in Oshkosh, Wis., this Friday. Purdue is purchasing 16 of the single-engine planes and an Embraer Phenom 100 jet for its new fleet. Total cost is about $8.6 million, paid for with money from the sale of the old 20-plane fleet and department funding.

Assistant aviation technology department head Mike Suckow says eight planes are already in hand, and all the new planes will be available when school starts this fall.

Purdue administrators also will use the $3.5 million Phenom for business travel.
