A new state law will help better protect school-children.

The law requires all teachers to be CPR certified.

Today the Red Cross in St. Joe County held a special CPR course to get teachers ready for the school year.

Along with CPR, the four hour course also demonstrated how to help someone who's choking.

The new law will prepare teachers for emergencies in the classroom.

"The Red Cross thinks everyone should be trained in how to do emergency procedures like this but in school in particular its very important that kids who are running around in the lunch room or wherever that somebody know how to help them in case they are choking," says John Pinter, the director of the St. Joseph County Red Cross.

For those not able to make the class today, the Red Cross will have an online class available but an "in person" CPR test will still be needed for certification.
