The Indiana Supreme Court has rejected a lawsuit that claimed the state is violating its constitution by failing to provide enough money for all school children to have a fair chance at learning.

The court released a 4-1 decision Tuesday, ruling that while the state constitution requires a uniform system of public schools, it does not set any quality standards.

The decision reverses an appeals court ruling that would have allowed a trial on the lawsuit's arguments that many children -- especially those who are poor or minorities or have learning disabilities -- do not have the same chance as others to achieve state-mandated standards.

The suit coordinated by the Indiana State Teachers Association was filed in 2006 on behalf of nine children and their families.
