SBCSC holding Parent Education Summit

The South Bend School Corporation is holding a Parent Education Summit this weekend at Century Center.

It is a valuable opportunity for families to learn about a variety of education topics, from safety at schools to the ISTEP and managing student behavior.

Dr. Pat O’Connor, the Assistant Superintendent of Instruction with South Bend Schools, was on 16 Morning News today to talk about the summit. Click on the video link above to hear her interview.

On Saturday, April 25, 2009 South Bend Community School Corporation will hold a Parent Education Summit at Century Center.

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Patricia Edwards. She will speak about Investing in Your Child’s Future at 9:00 a.m. in Century Center. Dr. Edwards is a professor of Language and Literacy at Michigan State University. She has authored three books related to parent involvement. Her most recent book, Tapping the Potential of Parents will be given to those in attendance on Saturday.

Following the keynote address, there will be three forty-minute sessions with information provided by local experts.

  • Session I: 9:50 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
  • Session II: 10:45 a.m. – 11:25 a.m.
  • Session III: 11:40 a.m. – 12:20 p.m.

Parents may choose from the following session topics:

  • Keeping Students Safe* by Sgt. Lee Ross (South Bend Police Department)
  • Student Behavior Management at Home* by Ray Turner (SBCSC) and Patricia Hanock (Family & Children’s Center)
  • Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder by Gina Piraccini (SBCSC)
  • Stepping Up with Parents* by Brenda Alvarez, Nancy Jacobson-Reighter and Erika Jones (SBCSC)
  • Monitoring the Internet by Jennifer Hasbrook (St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office)
  • A Parent’s Introduction to ISTEP* by John Ritzler (SBCSC)
  • Taking Families from the Couch to Fun and Fitness* by Jewel Abram-Copenhaver and Matt Michelle (HealthWorks)
  • No Parent Left Behind* by Joyce Long, Stewart Greene (University of Notre Dame) and Kenny & Tanya Palmer, Myra Maddron, and Ronald & LaQuisha Jackson (SBCSC parents)
  • Snapshots of Kindergarten: Getting Ready by Kathy Carson (SBCSC)
  • Employment Skills by Tom Primrose (Workforce One)
  • Childhood Illnesses – Asthma by Dr. Asad Ansari, M.D., MPH
  • Parents and Children Read Together by Kris Springer (St. Joseph County Public Library)

  • Making Reading Fun at Home and on the Run! By Judy Wilson, Julie Toth, Linda Krillenberger, and Nancy Philabaum (SBCSC)
  • Personal Finances by Randy Hoover and Jeneen Crane (Teachers Credit Union)
  • High School Options: Magnet Programs and Early College by Dave Medich, Chris Banaszak, Martha Lustik and Candace Butler (SBCSC)
  • High School Graduation Requirements, College Admission Requirements, and Financial Aid by Dennis Kielton, Theresa Lauver, Irene Patterson and Brian Bloem (SBCSC), Cyndi Lang and Cathy Buchman (IUSB Office of Financial Aid), Christina Brooks (University of Notre Dame Office of Admissions), and Emily Sheldon and Susan Ushela (Saint Mary’s College Office of Admissions)

*Spanish translators will be available for six of the sessions.

In addition to the keynote speech and sessions provided by local experts, there will be a Career and Community Agency fair open from 9:50 a.m. until 12:20 p.m. Presenters include local colleges, military, community agencies, and businesses.

Free shuttle buses will be available from Adams, Clay, Riley and Washington high schools. The first buses will depart the high schools at 8:15 a.m. A second bus will leave at 8:30 a.m. Buses will depart Century Center and return to the high schools at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
