Indiana unlikely to shift from school standards

A push by some parents and legislators to pull Indiana from a national set of reading and math education standards seems unlikely to succeed this year.

A bill that could be voted on by the state Senate in the coming week would suspend implementation of Common Core State Standards until after the state Board of Education finishes a new review of the benchmarks it adopted in 2010.

House education committee chairman Robert Behning says he won't support a delay on the standards, and the Board of Education this month unanimously reaffirmed its support for them.

Indianapolis mother Erin Tuttle says lawmakers should make sure the standards get a thorough vetting. She says members of Hoosiers Against Common Core will keep up their fight regardless of this year's outcome.
