After more than a year of negotiations between teachers and the school board, a mediator was brought in to strike a deal in WaNee schools.

Students, parents and teachers rallied outside the administration building Monday afternoon.

Teachers there have been working with out a contract this year, and they're fighting for a raise for next year. So far for their next contract, the board has not offered any sort of raise, and has proposed increasing health insurance premiums. Also, just a few weeks ago, thirteen teachers were told they would not be needed come next school year.

“We just cannot stay silent anymore. We have to speak out for ourselves and our students and our programs at our school,” Kay Kelley, a Nappanee elementary school teacher says.

Negotiations ended yesterday with no deal. The mediator will return on May 20th to resume discussions.
