Seventeen of the nation's 50 largest cities had high school graduation rates lower than 50 percent, with the second-lowest graduation rates reported in Indianapolis.

That's according to a report released today by America's Promise Alliance.

It says 30.5 percent of Indianapolis high school students graduated, second nationwide only to Detroit.

The Indiana Department of Education calculates graduation rates differently. Using that formula, Indianapolis Public Schools had a graduation rate of 46.1 percent last year.

The district is taking steps to try and improve its graduation rate, such as allowing students who disrupt classes to attend school during evenings and on Saturdays so they can continue earning credits without causing problems for other students.
