South Bend School Board still mulling cuts
South Bend, Ind.
The South Bend Community School Corporation board is still trying to figure out how to eliminate a more than $10 million budget shortfall it faces over the next two years.

    i think that she needs to give back that $40,000 pay raise she took if she is really worried about the money instead of getting rid of the janitors that could keep at least 2 of them out of the 15 you want to fire so that way they can take care of there family some of us have mouths to feed and will lose our house and car when you fire us you ever think of that on ms greaty

    The superintendant for one. She is paid nearly $200K per year!! That is insane!!

    I think a good place to start would be to vote for John Gregg for governor in the fall and whoever runs against Tony Bennett. Both Bennett and Daniels are committed to privatizing education which basically means choking off funding to the public schools. If you want to know the real problem, there it is. The solution is more than should we cut administrators' salaries or which schools to close and how we vote is somthing we can all do.

      The public education system is a failure. Privitizing education is the way to go. Teachers' unions have fostered unsustainable pensions and benefits while protecting incompetent individuals who are ineffective at teaching our children. With dropout rates north of 50%, why shouldn't we consider a different approach? We have been throwing money at public education for 50 years and it just gets worse and worse.

    I agree start at the top and let "it" roll down hill. Then let's put them in a classroom instead of an executive luncheon and take even more money and help and see then what they say. Less and less ambition and pride in wanting to be a teacher because of ADMINISTRATIVE cut backs what a shame.

    First, Let's cut the fat in the palace downtown. If you can teach, you are in the classroom. If not, you can retire. Close 4 elementary schools(What dumb name primry centers). Go back to k-6, 7-8, 9-12 in the schools. Offer retirement to teachers, and staff. End the consent decree. It costs at least one million dollars a year in increased bussing costs. Go back to neighborhood schools, but offer adademies(Lasalle) for the gifted students in certain areas. Finally, stop acting like going back to when the SBCSC produced quality grads is going back to the bad old days. The SBCSC used to be a good school system. Now it is just a bloated liberal social experiment. End bussing, go back to neighborhood schools(with uniforms for every student), and bring back discipline. The solution is simple. If you want world class quality, you should expect it, and demand it from everyone, starting with the parents. The SBCSC once produced the cream of the crop. We can again.

    How about eliminating busing? They have to be spending multiple millions on all the buses.

    What SB school officials are getting paid "so much money"? The staff already works for pennies on the dollar.

    They say the word "corporation" at least five times in this article and "education" once. Seems to me the thing you talk about most,in any conversation is the thing that is most important. Maybe it's just me.

    Ok maybe its just me but, Schmidt said "they will replace some teachers who retire so classrooms don't become overcrowded." My question is overcrowded with whom? teachers or students. She also said 94% of the general fund is people, I assume she means teachers, where do the administrators paychecks come from I'll bet they have a differant fund for that.How about cutting the top administrators funds, that should be the first place they look. Macri termination is personnel? We payed his salary all those years. Did he work for us? Don't we have a right to know why he was fired?

    I think that we should cut the superintendents pay first considering she makes almost $200,000 a year! Keep the teachers that we desperately need!
