More parents sending students to private schools over public schools

The final count is in: nearly 4,000 students transferred from public to private schools with financial assistance from the state of Indiana.

Indiana's new choice scholarship voucher program uses taxpayer funds to help pay private school tuition for students who meet certain income guidelines.

This year, 373 students chose to leave the South Bend schools. That represents a loss in state support for the South Bend Public Schools of about $2 million.

Forty-four students left the Elkhart Public Schools, while 22 departed Penn, Harris, and Madison. Mishawaka Public Schools lost 21 students to choice, and Goshen lost 19.
