"No written word, no spoken plea, can teach our youth what they should be, nor all the books on all the shelves, its what the teachers are themselves." Judging on the commentary, what do you think the youth in our community are getting from us as adults and teachers ???

I know this makes me rethink what I was about to write. Congratulations to all the teachers and I hope you all strive and are deserving of this honor every year.

When the children struggle the teachers blame the parents. When they succeed the teachers act as though they are the biggest influence.

In response to John: The blame game does NOT solve anything. In fact, it really shows where our priorities are in life. Teachers are working very hard to help their students. Parents are working very hard to support their families. Our community as a WHOLE needs to come together and work as a team. Enough with pointing fingers and being critical of each other. Appreciate the positives and try to fix the hiccups when they happen, and move on. Together, as a village we can raise our children and plan for a better future. :o) What type of role model do you want to be for a child??? (Just a thought)

There are many great teachers in every school system, including South Bend. Teachers have become the single greatest adult influence in a child's life, so you may want to start supporting them.

Navarre Intermediate is a South Bend school. Dig yourself out of that Granger snobbery and read.

Cathy, You need to read the article more carefully. There IS a South Bend teacher as a Top 10 finalist. Please don't jump to conclusions. South Bend Schools are absolutely amazing and the teachers who work daily to help the students grow in so many aspects, are extremely dedicated individuals.
