With the start of school just around the corner, the Indiana State Police are making Michiana drivers aware of school zone laws.

ISP reminds drivers to give school buses plenty of distance and to be aware of posted school speed limits. Drivers should also pay close attention to children waiting for the school bus, especially in the early morning hours.

Parents should also review with children the safest way to wait for and board the bus. Children should wait for the bus in a safe place away from traffic.

They also should not horseplay at or around the bus stop. Before boarding the bus, children should wait until it and other traffic comes to a complete stop.

Children should always cross in front of the bus, in view of the driver. When on the bus, children should remain seated while the bus is in motion and should talk quietly so that the driver will not be distracted.
