NewsCenter 16’s Maureen McFadden was one of the four judges who listened to a dozen students taking part in the college's first speech competition.
It was named The Frank Zink Speaking Competition in honor of the professor who developed the communications programs not only at Ivy Tech, but at IUSB, Bethel, Notre Dame and Saint Mary's.
Zink, who was Maureen’s professor and adviser, was humbled and surprised that the new competition was named in his honor.
“I have a hard time with this,” said Zink. “I was adjunct teacher of the year here at Ivy. I think maybe it's the capstone to 43 years and maybe they're telling me it's time to retire and watch the grass grow, but I am not leaving. I like teaching too much.”
And after 38 years at various colleges he is still inspiring students.
