Purdue University's Air Force ROTC unit has been named the nation's top Air Force officer-training program.

The West Lafayette campus' ROTC unit beat out competitors from 143 other schools to win the Right of Line Award and grab its first national honor.

Purdue was announced as the award's winner last week during a
gathering in Montgomery, Ala., of college Air Force ROTC units.

Winners of the award named after an Air Force term meaning "you're the best" are judged on factors that include leadership training, military education and producing high-quality Air Force officers.

Purdue's ROTC detachment has 180 cadets and has for several years produced the largest number of officers in the Big Ten.
