Four charter high schools - including one named after former public schools and ex-NBA star Jalen Rose - are expected to open in Detroit.
The Detroit Free Press reports Wednesday they are part of a program supported by Michigan Future Schools and a plan to open 70 new schools to improve the city's poor graduation rate.
Cornerstone Health, Dr. Benjamin Carson High School of Science &
Medicine, Diplomas Now Detroit High School and the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy are expected to open next fall with ninth-grade
classes. Diplomas Now and Carson will be run by Detroit Public Schools.
The Skillman, W.K. Kellogg and Kresge foundations and the McGregor Fund are supporting Michigan Future Schools, which has pledged to open 35 high schools in the region during the next several years.
