4.5 million Nintendo 3DS systems are in the hands of gamers in the United States alone.

Nintendo says it's sold 4.5 million units nationwide in its first year, generating more than $1.2 billion in revenue.

That's well ahead of the original DS handheld. 2.3 million were sold during its first year on the market.
