With electricity costs on the rise, more Indiana communities may join the fight against a Nipsco rate increase.

The utility company recently filed a petition with state regulators for its intended rate hike.

Right now, Laporte County is the only one fighting the rate increase.

But the mayor of Hammond is calling on Lake County communities to speak out.

We don't know yet how much the increase will be. Nipsco will release the numbers next month.

they are changing the name to ripsco cause that's what they do! i was reading in some states they are paying as high as 70 to 80 dollar's a month for electric. i am praying that i will see one that CHEAP because i havent seen one that cheap in 10 year's with "RIPSCO". i wish i had aep, remc or anyone but ripsco. i never see a electric bill less then 100.00 and im not talking about both electric and gas just electric itself. if im lucky i see 98.00 in the fall or spring when i dont use ac if you cross your finger's. as the dollar drop's in value the more we pay for good's etc but there is greed involved also. i see it getting so bad that people here in the late great u.s.a. will freeze to death and or starve to death. i have heard people say they will do without food before dropping cable/satellite what is wrong with people's thinking? i can do without cable i can do without a phone if it comes to that point but you cant live without food, shelter, heat, water thats most important.

I worte Mitch about this and the here is the reply: Thank you for contacting the Governor's Office and for sharing your thoughts and concerns about NISPCO's pending rate case. The Governor shared your letter with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission ("IURC") and asked me to respond. Public opinion plays an important role in the decision-making process and citizens are given the opportunity to speak in favor of or against cases pending before the Commission. The Office of Utility Consumer Counselor ("OUCC") represents ratepayers before the Commission. You can find out more information by visiting the OUCC's Web site: http://www.in.gov/oucc/3417.htm. This page is specific to NIPSCO's pending electric rate case and will provide updates on its progress. The OUCC's homepage is http://www.in.gov/oucc/. Everyone needs to write him and complain about NIPSCO.

Saw where natural gas was hitting records lately, think it came down some but if it's hitting records in the summer, where do u think that puts it this winter? We're gonna have some real serious probs heating this winter if as they say our heating bills could more than double!! From $300/month to over $700?? I know few who could absorb that kind of increase....hope and pray the insanity ends soon ...and the greed of the energy providers....

NIPSCO isn't just gas. It's the electric that gets us in the summer. The AC runs nearly as high as the heat in winter, which isn't low, and unlike the chilly house in the winter, I can do little to find comfort from the warm, stuffy house in this hot weather. I did find that when I was tempted to lower the thermostat and kick on the AC, going outside for a few minutes makes the house feel cool and dry! I don't live in the mentioned counties, but I wish some one would do something for the whole area. I'm actually worried about winter this year. The sales tax increase may not seem like much, but it, along with the increase in prices because of the gas prices, pushed coffee off my weekly list. (It is nearly the last luxury I got. All that's left is dry cereal and real meat instead of "mechanically constructed vegetable protein & beef product"-which I am leaving for last because it's nasty, besides, I, like most people, am sensitive to soy.) And now, higher heating costs? What's left?

My water heater is gas, other than that, in the summer, I use none. And it's still $40 a month. What a joke.

I don't actually use any gas during the summer, the only thing run from gas is the furnace. Yet just the other day I get a bill for $33?! THAT should not be legal. They're charging for something someone isn't using ANY of. I don't plan on running my heat above 62 this winter, can't afford it. Sadly, unlike layering clothes like me - even more are going to be using space heaters, more fires, less firemen. Why can't the big gurus actually SEE where all this is going to eventually lead?

Mitch Daniels is getting a kickback from them. Just another one of the "great" things he's done for our state.

You know if our leaders here in St. Joseph County would do that, maybe a selected few people would have more money to help take care of tax shortfall. If they could find a way to fight the electric companies, insurance companies, and the biggest problem of all the fuel companies, or whatever greedy individuals responsible for dictating the fuel prices, that would make it possible in most situations for people to make up some of the tax shortfall. Like someone said the other day in another article, they are lazy, lazy, lazy.

About time SOMEONE tried to fight this greedy company. I looked today and my bill has risen more than 50% in 2 years time for the month of June. I know the economics of the world has changed, but come on. Do some internal controls and trim your budget like we do first!

Good luck with the protest...You can't fight city hall, or a monopoly like Nipsco..They just keep raising their rates whenever they feel like it and no one seems to be able to stop them. Just wait til this winter...You will have to take out a loan to pay your gas bill!!
