Social Security payments are going to rise for the first time in two years.

The federal government announced the 3.5 percent increase to Social Security checks Wednesday.

The increase, which is tied to the consumer price index, will take effect in January.

This is the first increase since 2009, because inflation was too low to merit a raise.

A congressional analysis says the average Social Security benefit will rise by just over $500 a year.
