$100.00 hold for a $15.00 purchase. The $15.00 cleared the bank but the hold will not clear until Saturday. 4 days later. if the amount clears, the hold should clear off the same day. This is a crime. My bank said to pay inside not at the pump. Why the difference if you use the debit carb in or out. Robbery - plain and simple. BP just lost my business.

I put $5.00 worth of gas yesterday and they took $125.00 out of my cking acct. The bank said it was a hold until the funds were cleared. To me this is CRAZY!!!!!!!!! What can we do to stop this from happening to me and others.

No matter vote past or not from the main person that make this up is the crime lord behind the lies. Is still a crime to steal customers money. Gas pump cost you $25 dollars plus tax and that only you have to pay. Agaist the law to put a charge your bank without your aprove. They use your card agaist you after was final. Store manager and employees need to ingore where the lies come from or need contact local police to arrest store manager and the employee at no matter if the are told to do that on customers.

I used my debit card for only $15.06. That's all I needed because my car was already half full and I wanted it full. Shortly after I checked my account and it cleared. However it is the next day and I have a pending charge from Shells for 90. It only takes me $45 to fill up my car when it's on empty!!!!! My bank is closed and now thathat money was to pay my daughter's daycare bill!!!!!

OK I have read many different conflicting things here...If I use My debit card as a debit card either inside the gas station or at the pump and enter my pin, the bank only puts a hold on the actual amount of gas I get...If I get 20 bucks it shows up as soon as I get done on my account as a pending transaction for the exact amount of gas I bought...If I use my debit card as a credit card it always puts a $1 hold on my account and in a couple of the the $1 comes off and the amount of gas I bought shows on my account.. I alway like to use my debit card as a debit card because it shows on my account as soon as I use it ...That way if you look at your account you know exactly how much money you have in your account...

Many of these gas stations put a $75 hold on your card. Their payment is processed the next day, but the hold is one there for up to a week or more! There should be some type of regulation on this so that once the payment goes through, the hold is released. I used to only go to the gas station at Walmart in Plymouth because their's was off in 24 hours. Not any longer! Now it is 7-10 days! What a pain!!!

Why are people so mean in their commentary. The man is not kiting a check. He spent a certain amount in gas and one of the parties involved is holding more of his money than he spent. That is not the same as check kiting. Some families are living within their budgets, but that budget is tight due to job losses and hour cuts. Don't be so judgmental and mean spirited.

My bank puts a $1 holding on all purchases at most gas stations. I only say most because the only one i have problems with is Shell.. With the others the amount you spend showes up as a pending transaction right away and use your atm/credit card as a credit card and stick to familar stations where you know the clerks.

McClure gas stations give a 5 cent per gallon discount if you pay with cash. Sure that only saves a couple dollars per week, but after one year that is over $100 extra in my pocket. It helps that I pass that gas station almost every day so I don't use any extra gas driving to a McClure station. But more importantly, I don't need to use a card at the pump.

Morons. How is this an issue? Don't waste money you don't have same concept as kiting checks and then you point the finger at the Financial Institutions Stupid Consumers.

I had the same thing happen to me. I was at the gas station in New Buffalo by Four winds when you get off the highway, bought gas then later that day went to the store for a few grocerys. The next morning when I checked my bank account I was charged an overdraft fee for insufficient funds. After investagating relized the station had charged me 160.00 because I used my debit card. The first time I used it at the pump it did not work so had to go inside to use it. I was charged both times 80.00 dollars even thoe my card did not work the first time outside. Thankfully the bank reenstated my account. When I called the station to let them know what happen they denied the did that and I must have just been randomly picked to have this happened to. I was still charged even after I went inside. I will now say credit instead of debit, and will be going inside. Some stations will ask at the pump credit or debit, but alot of them don't. lesson learned...........

This was an issue for me, until recently with the cost of gas being a dollar higher than it was I easily spend that or most of that when I fill up my little Kia, or heaven forbid my truck. $75 doesn't get much in a truck.

It is NOT the banks placing the hold, it is the vendor (gas station, hotel, car rental place, etc). And as a side note, if you use a debit card and only $1 is authorized, YOU know how much you purchased...keep a bank register and know how much $$ you have...it's not the bank's fault that YOU can't manage your finances.

No Chase has hold limits on GASOLINE.. to help prevent cards that are stolen from being misused.. they do this because it is the easiest way to use a card that you have no pin for and don't have to show a card or valid ID since you can pay at the pump... many other banks do this as well.. Chase just rose their limit to $100 due to the rising cost of fuel

Chase putting limits on purchases is NOT the same as what this article is about. When you swipe your card, the VENDOR- AKA the Gas Station issues a hold to your account to verify that there are indeed funds in your account to cover your purchase. This protects them from taking a loss. The bank does not control how much the hold is placed for!!!!!!!
