‘Passport Fair’ comes to South Bend Post Office

On several Saturdays in December, the South Bend Post Office will offer extended passport hours to help travelers prepare for international trips.

On December 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th, the main post office on 424 S Michigan St in South Bend will have their passport office open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

South Bend Postmaster Larry Dauby recommends customers come in as early as possible to apply for passports. In order to avoid any extra costs, it is suggested to apply at least two months before traveling.

Normally it costs $97 total for adults (16 years and older) with separate payments of $30 to the U.S. Postal Service for its processing fee and $67 to the State Department for the passport application fee.

For persons under 16, the total cost is $82 with the $30 payment to the U.S. Postal Service and a $52 fee to the State Department.

For expedited service, add $60 for each application plus an extra $16.25 for the Express Mail passport return service, payable to the U.S. State Department.

Passport photos are also available at the South Bend Post Office for $15.

To help the passport application process go smoothly and efficiently, the Postal Service recommends:

  • Bring in proper proof of American citizenship. This must be either: a certified birth certificate issued by the city, county, or state; a previous U.S. passport; a certificate of citizenship; or a naturalization certificate. (Please note a hospital-issued birth certificate is not acceptable.)

  • Bring in proof of identity. This must be either: a previous U.S. passport; a certificate of citizenship; a naturalization certificate; or a current valid driver’s license, government ID, or military photo ID.

  • The passport application requires two recent identical photographs. To save time, customers can download a passport application at the USPS.com website.

  • All applicants must appear in person (including minors.) Applicants under age 14 must appear with both parents. If one parent is not available, a notarized authorization from the absent parent is required.
