It doesn't get anymore Midwestern than this. If hot dogs are a hit for you then we've got your homerun. This is Waka dog in downtown Mishawaka.

Back in May, Cheryl Copeland opened this small mom and pop restaurant. She and her husband saw a show on TV about America's love for hotdogs. So they put their heads together and Waka dog was born.

“Weeks later I quit my job and a month later this was open and all because of a TV program actually.”

Inside is small and cozy, very family friendly, and everywhere you look personified hotdogs hang from the walls which were created by Cheryl’s son.

As for which dog is a grand slam hit, well the answer is easy. Cheryl says, “I would say the Chicago is the most popular. People really like it and we hear a lot of comments that our’s is real, authentic Chicago hot dogs.”

The 1/2 pound Waka dog is huge and usually done Chicago style. In addition to the enormous frank, the chili cheese dogs are great (my favorite) and the onion rings are great as well. Pulled pork sandwiches topped with coleslaw are an unusual combo but works well!

Breakfast is big here. The Waka omelet is filled with sliced hot dogs (yes, hot dogs) and cheese (big enough for 2) and don't forget the biscuits and gravy. Every week there is a homemade dinner special this week's meatloaf, mashed potatoes and green beans. Yes, just like mom used to make.

Prices at Waka dog are very reasonable because Cheryl wants to keep that small town Midwestern feel. When folks leave here, bellies will be full and wallets won't be empty.
