As kids start getting ready to back to school, many do not have all of the school supplies they need.

At the end of July, WNDU held our annual Pack-a-Backpack drive to collect backpacks and school supplies for kids in Michiana. This weekend, students in South Bend schools have a chance to get just some of those supplies and others that have been donated across the area.

On Saturday, from 9-12 at Adams High School, South Bend students can receive a free backpack filled with supplies. They'll be handed out on a first-come, first-serve basis and children must be accompanied by their parent or guardian.

There are several other backpack/school supplies giveaways going on across Michiana tomorrow, including at:

  • Martin Luther King Center, South Bend
On Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. the Martin Luther King Center is hosting a Youth Explosion event. Free school supplies will be handed out, and there will also be free health screenings, entertainment, motivational speakers, hair cuts, face painting, basketball tournaments and more. The event is sponsored by Citizens Committed to Save Our Youth and the South Bend Chapter Black Expo.

  • Minority Health Coalition Annual Health Fair, Elkhart
On Saturday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. the Minority Health Coalition Annual Health Fair and Back to School event will be going on at the Historical Roosevelt Center in Elkhart. There will be free school physicals, immunizations, health screenings and hair cuts. Backpacks, food and clothes will also be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • School Supply Spectacular, Cass County
The Lewis Cass Intermediate School District and the Backpack Club of Cass County are holding their third annual School Supply Spectactular on Saturday. Students and families in Cass County are welcome to attend and children must be accompanied by their parent or guardian. It's going on at the Brookside Learning Center on Dailey Road in Cassopolis and the doors open at 9 a.m. They have at least 1,500 stuffed backpacks to give away on a first-come, first serve basis for students preschool through high school. There will also be haircuts, dental checks, bus safety sessions and more.
