We all know that this January has been a very snowy month, and since we have rarely warmed above freezing, most of that snow is still sitting on our yards.  At the South Bend Regional Airport, we have had a whopping 53.5" of snow as of 7pm on the 29th.  While we might add a little to this the next 2 days, it will not alter where this month will stand in history.  Of course, of this 53.5", an amazing 26" fell on the 8th, 36" on two days (7th and 8th), and 39" on three days (6th, 7th, 8th).  That means that only 14.3" of snow has fallen on the other 25 days...not too impressive.  All of this will make January of 2011 the second snowiest January on record.  However, records for snow only go back to 1949, so it is possible we had more than that during some Januarys around the turn of the century...another cold period.  Here's how January of 2011 stacks up...

January 1978:    86.1"

January 2011:   53.5"

January 1959:   45.3"

January 1979:   45.1"

January 1982:   41.3"

This brings our seasonal snow total to 78.4" of snow.  Obviously we will be going past the 80" that I forecasted back in November, and the original 85" I forecasted in October.  (I should have stuck with the 85"!!!)  This has been a VERY unusual La Nina winter...usually we get some dramatic warmups.  We've only had one big warmup so far...around New Years.  The only thing going for me is that every other local forecast for this winter had us very mild with a lot less than normal snowfall.  At least I did go above normal for snowfall, but I am still going to be way short.  I figure we'll end up with over 100" of snow, a feat we've only accomplished 6 other times since 1949.

Well mike idk if were going to hit that 100" mark that we've only reached 6 times with this warm up swhich looks like a pretty good chance of being above normal for the while and a early spring we might only hit 99" how sad would that be lol

A little bitter there Dwayne!! Personally I think the weather forecastors do a pretty good job. You need to remember they don't make the weather they just try and figure out what it's going to do. They are right quite often. I doubt you are perfect in your job assuming you have one.

We've been lucky to not have sub-zero temps, but some of those warm-ups would be nice! Not at all looking forward to this "blizzard" that could be coming this week. And here we haven't had half the snow South Bend has had!

We're definitely ready for spring or it can stay cold but no more snow. Kids are praying for snow though, they want a few more snowdays, us parents sure don't want that.

Let's picket in front of the WNDU station with signs saying 'NO MORE SNOW NO MORE'. All this snow is another reason why South Bend is ranked #8 on the dying cities list

The 53" is misleading since not everybody had 36" during that storm. We had around 18" at my home, so not complaining. But, the overall month was cold (but not brutal) with mostly light snow. It can't compare to some of the January's of the 70's and even 80's when storms with wind piled up the snow for multiple days vs one lake effect day. The best winter month of my adult life was Dec of 1999 when it snowed a lot more than this and was very cold. The Benton Harbor area received 80" of snow that month. I hope Feb can add some more snow, and then we can have spring starting in March. Mike, make it happen. ha ha
