JOEL: Brutal Gas Prices...and Boating on the Lake vs. Amazon. 6/13/'08

Hey all...

OK, let's just talk about these gas prices.  They went up $0.20 yesterday.  WHAT?  Many experts say it's the Economists and all their speculation that is driving up the prices (saying gas will be $5.00 by July 4 will make it that way).  These folks and those Oil company and OPEC jerks need to get their heads out of their rear ends and start thinking about people other than themselves.  If China can drill off the coast of Florida, why can't we??  This is very serious.  It's not secret our country is going downhill.  People can say our country "isn't in a recession."  What???  They how do you describe the state we are in?  I would like to think at some point we'll reach a ceiling and prices will start to go down - though I think that is a long way off.  I also think the news should STOP doing gas price stories (which are daily fixtures in news).  What does it accomplish?  It just gets people mad and frustrated.  Why keep talking about something we can't change and that is now a fact of life?  When gas goes down THEN announce it - not when it goes up.  Pointless.  There, I said it.

In happier news, yesterday was spent at the lake.  We loaded up the Sea Doos (wave runners, whatever) and headed to a local lake in Michigan.  The weather was great - hazy sun and warm.  I also love tubing behind a boat - the fast and bumpier the better!  Yee haw!  At one point I thought I smelled something burning.  Ohh wait, it was just my skin baking off since Joel only put on SPF 8 instead of at least 15 or 25.  I might has well have slathered on the BBQ sauce since I was roasting so nicely.  Eat your heart out, George Hamilton.

Though boating is not always a success for me.  Case in point: A few years ago I was in a very small, barely buoyant canoe on the Amazon River in Peru.  In case you don't know, the Amazon is massive, looks like ice tea (you can only see your hand barely a couple inches under the water - it's that brown), and can be quite deep (not to mention what lives in there).  The tiny canoe I was in suddenly filled with water and sank.  The current took me down the river and I had to be picked up by a speedboat.  I will never forget that but it hasn't kept me out of the water - I absolutely love it.

Have a great weekend, enjoy the weather,  and go easy on the gas!!!

Yes, the gas prices are brutal. It is hard for my family with both of us working, and I can't imagine how unemployed families and those with only 1 working are going to make it. We definitely need to do something, and I agree that reporting on the rising prices only makes consumers more frustrated and angry. I know I try to make combination trips now, and really decide if I need to go to the store for whatever. The oil companies and speculators need to be investigated very minutely to see where the problem is. The American public can't be blamed for the entire problem.

Hi Joel, Actually, China is NOT drilling for oil off the coast of Florida. VP Cheney "misspoke" (lied?)when we said that. And he was quoting George Will who also got it wrong. FARK.com has the story. The only real way to lower gas prices is to use less. People, SLOW DOWN when you drive. Don't gun the engine, keep the RPMs low. Car pool. Tele-commute if you can. Also, don't just report that gas went up, WHY did it go up?!?! Investigate that! Report on that! Ah, much better. Thanks for letting me rant.
