I got wind that WSBT attacked us in their weather blog earlier this week.  So, I checked it out, and they were correct. While not specifically naming WNDU, it was pretty obvious.  :)  They claim that we don’t put much work into our forecast and that their forecast of 50 degrees this past Monday was a perfect forecast.  If you were outside in the zero degree wind chills that day, you know that is laughable.  I do not believe in attacking other stations or meteorologists either on the air or on-line.  I guess that’s my Hoosier upbringing.  However, I do think that I have a right to respond to attacks, especially when they are so far off base.

This station claims that their forecasted high of 50 degrees for both Sunday and Monday earlier this week was correct, and that everybody else was wrong.  Well, do you believe  a temperature that jumps to around 50 degrees for 4 hours around midnight qualifies as a good forecast?  When we forecast the weather, we are forecasting for the daytime high temperature…not the middle of the night.  We might say rising to 50 at night but the daytime high is what we are forecasting.  So we had a high forecast for Sunday of 45…it hit 46 degrees by 7pm.  We had a forecasted high of 33 for early Monday with falling temperatures.  It was 24 by 6am and fell to 11 with wind chills below zero by noon.  Do you think that a forecast that says a low Sunday night of 26 and a high on Monday of 50 is correct?  To me that is laughable.  Anybody who went outside expecting 50 degree weather on Monday was in for a rude awakening.  To me, our forecast was the correct one.  I find it amazing that somebody would claim to be correct when the thermometer jumps to 53 at midnight and back down to 11 during the day.

It was also implied that we are lazy and just go with the computer numbers.  I take offense to that.  Anybody who watches my forecast on TV knows that I stray from the computer numbers a lot.  (see my previous blog from a week ago)  In fact the forecast for this entire week on the computers was for highs in the mid to upper 30’s.  WSBT  went with the computer numbers.  The WNDU forecast was for highs in the low to mid 20’s early this week and upper 20’s late in the week.  You know it’s been very cold!  So far, we haven’t had a high above 24 degrees through Wednesday, and it definitely won’t get out of the 20’s on Thursday.  I think we did a great job forecasting what actually happened in the weather this week.

While nobody is going to be correct all the time at forecasting the weather, I believe that our forecast at WNDU is very good most of the time.  Our loyal viewers know that and continue to watch because of that.  And we will continue to work hard every day to put out the best forecast possible.

 Mike

I typically like Mike and WNDU for the weatherm although I have nothing against Rick w/WSBT. But since I have gotten rid of the newspaper and in these last few months, and been checking the websites for my news...WSBT seems to be more up-to-date on the news in general if you ask me. I go back and forth (as I'm sure many do) and will see plenty of "news" items that WSBT has posted first, only to see it later on WNDU. And this is from a person who normally watches channel 16 on the telly.

Mike, I watch your weather because to me Rick looks like a Mouse sounds like a mouse and when my daughter was in High School you took and hr/half out of your day spent it on the phone with her and helped her with a Science project about hurricanes you even took the time and mailed her pictures to use for her project well what you did not know Mike is she called Rick before you and she was told by him " I do not do this kind of thing I am much to busy to help you with your project." But not you Mike like I said you made the time to help reach a kid you did not even know and to this day my daughter remembers that and speaks of that and you Mike are why she and I will only watch your weather. So you are a gem to this area keep up the great forecasting and ignore the mouse he has no idea on what he is talking about....

I'm actually surprised that you would even respond to that. So what? Take the high road. It's a little childish on both ends. Sorry.

Hi Mike, I always 100% watch WNDU's forcast and find it to be the most accurate. I have to admit that my husband and I often watch Cari Peugot's forcast in the mornings for just a few minutes to have a chuckle and find out what it's NOT going to do. It is funny as heck to listen to her say It's not going to be warm, its not going to be sunny, It's not going to snow a lot, It's not this and not that. So watch her for 10 minutes sometime and take notice of that. It's very comical. So we watch 'them' to see what the weather is NOT going to be like and we watch WNDU to see what the weather IS going to be which is more important to us. Keep up the great work and send in the snow gods. WE LOVE SNOW! Keep up the great work. We are more then thankful to have you and the entire WNDU weather team when severe weather is knocking on our door. You handled this manner with class. High Five!! :)

Mike, Your the ONLY weather forecast I watch. When I was younger I was at the station watching you do your work, I saw you putting a lot of time into your forecast. I have always love weather, you influenced me as I was young. I am now a weather spotter for National Weather Service. Thank you for all your hard work and keep it up Mike!!!

Why don't we have local news on Sundays? No one has it?

Mike, it is obvious that you dont know the true high and low temperature are sought anyways. The high temperature, no matter how long or what time of day or night it occured, is the warmest reading between 12:01am and 11:59pm and dido for the low. WNDU is lacking some effort in the forecas center. You guys have missed some big storms and predictions while WSBT has gotten them. WSBT has its flaws as well as weather is a hard thing to predict. WSBT was correct, as the temperature did hit 50, while they did explain it would occur quite early. The way I understand this "blog" war is just a shame, two grown men just can't face that one was right. If you look back to the NWS records, they will confirm the high temp was in the 5's and temps dropped sharply there after. Although, I do seem to find it very interesting that when ever a major storm happens, either Mike or Rick are on vacation.... I know if I were deemed "Chief Meteorologist", I would want to be part of the storm tracking coverage

Mike, It is because of you that my child loves weather. He wants to be a weather man.You are the only channel we trust. It takes some sheer pityness to attack someone like WSBT attacked you.Keep up the good work keeping families safe. You are a great role model for your kids and ours.My child comes from a broken home and needs someone to look up to. Thank you for that!Just ignore WSBT they are just scared because you are so much better! In all honesty I would rather you forcast then them for one huge reason. You can admit that you are wrong(which is hardly ever)Honesty and intergirty is hard to come by now a days. And you and your team have it in spades. You have my business!God Bless you and have a wonderful Christmas!
