Michiana residents outside on Wednesday evening, October 29th may have witnessed a bright streak going across the sky.

While there have been reports out of Colorado of a huge fireball in the sky last evening, we have also had some eyewitnesses to what were probably meteors here in Michiana.  We are not in a classic "meteor shower", although the Orionid meteor showers is winding down.  This could either be part of that, or just a random meteor that hit the earth's atmosphere.  Like we saw on Jupiter a few years ago, large meteors can break up in the atmosphere and fall in several places over a period of time.  Here in our area, the reports that I have been receiving came at about 9:10-9:15pm, and some of the e-mailers have said it was the brightest they had ever seen.  Others actually described it as a "very bright blue flood lamp".  The fireball in Colorado occurred last evening at 7:30pm MDT, which is 9:30pm our time.  So these could have been related.

Of course we won't know for sure.  But, if you were wondering what you saw last night, it was more than likely a meteor, and possibly part of a very large meteor.

My husband, son, and I were standing on our deck at 1:30am on 8/29 and saw the meteor. I thought it was a falling star. The night sky was clear and it looked like an explosion of light with a bright blue, green trail of light behind it. It was moving from sw to north. First time we have ever seen anything like it.

My wife & I saw a bluish light across the southern sky from sw to north around 9pm. You could actually see pieces "spraying" off of it leaving a trail of "sparks". I saw alot of meteors but none of this size and definition. It was bright and awesome.

We were driving home heading East when we saw the meteor from Spokane, Washington. It was just as big and bright here as you've described. Our sky was partially cloudy (or foggy) but it was so bright you could still see the brightness when it went behind a cloudy spot. Taking into account the time zone differences, the event correlates perfectly with. It was an awesome site and my wife's first sighting ever. Amazing!

I saw it in Aspen downtown. It was awesome! At beginning, I thought it might be fireworks, but after 2 seconds, I noticed it was probably meteor that I never saw as huge and clear and close as this time before!!Great!
