JOEL: Anchor Rants and Tantrums...oh my! 5/15/'08

Hey all...

Did you all see the video of FOX News Anchor Bill O'Reilly and his tantrum when he used to host "Inside Edition?"  If you haven't, here is a link to it (WARNING: strong language): http://youtube.com/watch?v=2tJjNVVwRCY  In the video he freaks out, screams, swears, tears off his mic, and completely loses his mind.  Is this called for?  Bill, grow up.  The man is loving all this attention so congrats to him for acting like a 3 year old.

A couple days ago NBC 4 (New York City)  Anchor Sue Simmons let the F-bomb fly on LIVE TV during a tease before the 11 p.m. show for everyone in NYC to hear and now the entire world.  I admit, I was shocked when I heard with how much vigor she threw out the word.   She be mad!  If you are looking for that clip, here it is (WARNING: graphic language): http://youtube.com/watch?v=nYAMDhVT50I

Part of me knows she is human, we all make mistakes, etc.  The other half of me thinks 'Wow, you've been a NYC anchor for more than 2 decades, get millions of dollars, and should know better.'  Bill O'Reilly's issue was more than a slip of the tongue.  He knew what he was doing and was getting more angry as he went on.  Now I have heard stories about him but seeing it with my own eyes makes it reality.  Boy needs to calm down!  These are people the public watches for news and information?  People they can trust?  In fairness, Simmons issued an apology during the 11 p.m. news that night -- O'Reilly's rant was off air but still very funny.  The #1 rule in news is always assume the mic is on even if it might not be.  Everyone makes mistakes.

When anchors drink and drive -- that is another story.

right on joel. there are a lot of pompous people in television and some are quite full of themselves and think they can do no wrong. luckly there are many more who are wonderful individuals who are friendly to the crew and work as a team to get the best product out to the public. thank you for being one of these people.

what's the last line about drinking and driving about?

Joel- I always like reading your blog, but the drinking and driving comment was just wrong. It's one thing to take the high road, but I expected more. Everyone around here loves our local newscasters no matter the station. You never know when in your life you'll need grace.

Are you serious? Have you looked at the tv lately? Bill O'Reilly has aged considerably -- make-up isn't that good! As for the comment, hope he has grown up since those years ago. Have a feeling, though, that type of behaviou is not that unusual for media people (having worked in a tv station I know how it can be). That does not excuse the foul language, either. But, let's be serious, the way you have it written you make it seem like this tantrum happened yesterday or today. Honesty is also an attribute!

Was Simmons talking to her co-anchor about something he was doing right then or was her curse regarding the story tease? BTW--Youtube had one video with 10 of the top rants/tantrums. Do anchors/hosts usually talk that way in the newsroom and then try to tone it down for on-air? A well-known local anchor (retired) uses vulgar language quite a bit of the time, and I often wondered how they worked for so long and didn't let it slip on-air. Hmmm. Anyhow, thank you, Joel! I really like your insight and discussions.
