Hey all...

As I write this we are a day away from the royal wedding.  Finally.  More than 7,000 journalists are paying (well, their stations are) mega bucks to fly over there and cover an event that is the marriage between a prince and a "commoner."   Is this worth all the hype?  Constant coverage day after day?

I'm really over.  Journalistically I should be all excited and hyped up with everyone else but I truly couldn't care less.  It's not even in America, has nothing to do with America, and I don't see the big deal.  If one of the Obama kids got married in a few years would it be this big of a deal?  Of course not.  "Joel, that's poppycock" you say?  Every network and news channel is going to air the wedding live starting at 4 a.m. eastern time.  It's going to be a gorgeous wedding - but enough is enough.

With that said, I know some people LOVE the royals - and that is totally cool and I respect that.  I just think the hype is way too much. 

Many will agree or disagree with this blog - and that's what blogs are for.  What do you think?

    Speaking for myself, there are so many problems today, Is nice to see that some things doesn't change, and I really like the tradition that they have hung onto. So I like the royals and it's each individual's choice where they want to watch or not, and if not, don't turn the telly on that station.

    I never understood the obsession with celebrities, or the obsession with knowing every aspect of someone else's day-to-day (Facebook,Myspace,Twitter,ect...). You guys realize the Royal family doesn't actually rule, right? They are the British equivalent of the American celebrity. Maybe i've just got more important things to deal with, idk. Just couldn't really care less.

    To be honest with you, I did not know it was Friday. I thought it was Saturday. So when I turned on the TV to watch the morning show, I thought "Why are they showing a rehearsal?" I quickly realized my unroyal error and turned off the TV. No interest in any of this...well expect when the horse fell and ran off riderless. When I heard about that I had to watch the rerun.

    Gotta agree with ya Joel....the history, the pagentry, the customs....all very cool, BUT...do we REALLY need to have this aired in it's entirity on US major networks? You are correct....the Obama daughters would not recieve as much attention. Nor should they. And as for Andrew and Kate dismissing all servants and doing THEIR OWN laundry, washing THEIR OWN dishes, mowing THEIR OWN yard.....ya, that'll last about 5 minutes. Get real....British Royalty soiling their hands? Not that I have ever seen and I am 55 yrs old! Keep up the awesome reporting Joel!

    It is on the too much hype side. But yet it's too interesting to not watch. So it's like catch 22. You get tired of listening to it but yet you don't want to miss anything.

    The Charles and Diana wedding was not "good news." Thye never seemed to have much in common. It certainly felt like an "arranged" marriage when a beautiful woman like Diana married someone like Charles. I'm more suspicious of these events ever since the first one (in my lifetime) ended so badly. I wish people here in the States would concentrate on their own lives and ignore this overhyped nonsense.

    I think it's something to be excited about. I get so tired of hearing about war, gas prices, that Lindsay girl and Charlie Sheen. Finally 2 people we can all look up to. Who cares if it's just fluff. Let's be happy for them!!!!!!!

    I, know, I'm SUCH a girl! I just love all the hype! I can't wait to see Kate's dress...the procession, the tiara's, the flowers...all of the fancy hats! I remember getting up really early to watch Diana marry Charles...it's just so much better than hearing about the Charlie Sheen's of the world...let us have a little good news once in a while! I for one will be dvr-ing and watching while I can tomorrow!

    In a word - yes, over-hype. But with the flux of 24 hour national new channels these days, over-hype is on "hyper"-drive. Charlie Sheen = over-hype. Hawaiian birth certificates = over-hype. The media doesn't so much tell the news as pick the news with the most meat and potential for ratings and repeat it over and over and over again. It's our fault as viewers too for feeding the frenzy by watching, but if you want to catch a glimpse of the real news being reported 5% of the time, you have to swim through the entire ocean of ridiculous nonsense just to get there. "Tonight, it's being reported Charlie Sheen has been arrested yet again!! And his cell mate is Lindsey Lohan!!! Tornados in Arkansas. You can now buy personalized royal wedding coffee mugs!!! --- wait. What was that?

    It seems like the media is trying make a huge story for the sake of news. The hype created by the media does not match that of the interest by the general public. I bet the NFL draft gets better ratings than this wedding.

    I'm so over it. How much more coverage and specials are they going to do on tv. I won't be getting up at 4am just to watch a wedding. I don't care where she shops or what she buys. I hope their marriage lasts forever......
