If you want to make your bathroom a safer place, perhaps you should "get a grip". It's not just a figure of speech - it's a real product. But could it "handle" our "As Seen on TV" test?

The “Get a Grip” is similar to what you would see professional glass or mirror installers carry around. It's something that attaches to non-porous surfaces and would be very handy in a bathroom where you have a lot of slip and fall accidents. You essentially have two round suction cups and a handle, and on the reverse side you have buttons that lock the suction cups into place.

Starting with a glass shower door, we just take the Get a Grip and put it on, lock it and pull the door shut. Now, to release it, we just undo the buttons.

Next, we’ll try it on a Corian shower. You just pop it on and it seems to have a pretty good grip. It pops off after tugging very hard on it.

The Get a Grip infomercial claims to be so strong, you can walk on it. We’ll put that to the test. I put a little weight on it, but it starts to slip slowly off shower surface as I climb on it. It's not strong enough to hold me.

Getting out of the tub can be a problem, especially for the elderly, so this would be a good thing to have. Lock it down and I can pull myself up.

Get a grip works on corian and glass, but it doesn’t work as well on ceramic tile. You can get a pretty good grip, but you need to make sure the suction cups don't go over the grout, so you have to be careful to put it between the grout to get a much better grip.

The Get a Grip can also be used outside the bathroom. Let's say you need to clean the bottom side of a glass table top. You put it down, lock it down and lift. It works pretty well on a heavy piece of glass.

The Get a Grip is a fairly effective tool. If you need an extra handle in the bathroom, you don't need to drill holes in the tile. It seems to work very well on non-porous surfaces. However, if you're going to use it on ceramic tile, make sure you don't put the suction cups over the grout area because that disturbs the air tight seal.

The commercial shows a guy using the Get a Grip as steps to get onto a boat, but you don't want to be stepping on this thing.

Overall it's a very good tool for keeping your balance, pulling yourself out of the tub and making life a little bit safer for yourself. So, if you want your life a little bit safer around the house, Get a Grip and we'll give it the thumbs up.

I want to stress that the Get a Grip is ideal for "temporary" support around baths and showers. It should not be used as a permanent fixture.
