The next time you’re in the Big Apple and want something to eat you won't forget - pay close attention to these to very unique Manhattan eateries - both located in Midtown at the Le Parker Meriden Hotel. The first is called "The Burger Joint." The awards it has racked up are nothing short of impressive.
General Manager Steven Pipes says, “What we said is let's do one thing and do it really well. There are no veggie burgers, no turkey burgers - we tried combos of 52 meats until we came up with the right one.”
Anyone who’s anyone has come into this tiny hole-in-the-wall restaurant. Everyone from Janet Jackson, to Heidi Klum, to Tom Hanks has grabbed a bit to eat here. “No body stares at the celebrities because they can have an easy time and enjoy their food while they're there. I think that's what makes people want to come here...they can be themselves.”
A wall of hundreds of signatures greets guests when they walk in. It can arguably be considered one of the best burgers in the country; the hole in the wall restaurant seats only about a dozen people but the line is often out the door. As for the price, it’s a New York steal with the burger and fries costing about $10.
However The Burger Joint is not the only restaurant in the hotel people flock to. Norma's is world renown for their breakfasts. Trust me; it is one you will never forget.
“We've taken breakfast and we've said, ‘you know what, it isn't a throw away meal it's a special meal, in fact it's the one people really care about the most’”
Since love is in the air this time of year, Executive Chef Emile Castillo and me are making heart shaped chocolate decadence French toast with pistachios and chocolate sauce. A bite of this will make you squash that New Year's resolution...but it's worth it.
But that is nothing compared to what we are made next. It's a dish that has attracted the spotlight from all over the world.
We made a $100 frittata which consists of 6 eggs, cream, and almost an entire lobster, but there's something missing. Since this is the $100 dish it is topped with 1 oz. Of Beluga caviar. However, they do make a $1,000 version complete with 10 oz. of caviar.
Yes, people do order it...usually to split within a group.
It's not a big restaurant but what's there is very modern and comfortable. The clientele is a nice mix of locals and tourists.
Steven Pipes adds, “It's sort of nautical with the portholes and the lights but it is a place you need to feel comfortable and it is in New York and it needs a New York vibe to it.”
So whether it's a burger you’re looking for or that breakfast you'll never forget, The Burger Joint and Norma's is where you can get a delicious taste of the Big Apple.
