What was once old and run down has been made new again, but with a new name. A Michiana coffee shop and diner is once again welcoming in patrons.
The bacon sizzles, the eggs are cracked, and along Twyckenham and Mishawaka Avenue sits the shell of a coffee shop and diner once known as the White House, but is now Jeannie’s House.
“I get a lot of regulars, a lot of regulars who used to be here 40 years ago. A lot of people say I've been coming here for fifty years,'" says owner Jeannie Rogge.
Jeannie's is only a couple months old, the sign isn't even up yet.
Rogge has been in the restaurant business all her life. She moved here from Arizona, often driving by this building that sat vacant for years. Finally, she decided to buy it and call it her own.
After a remodel, the new doors opened and those regulars returned, but not empty-handed.
“A lot of people bring their own cups in, I know who uses French vanilla cream,” says Rogge.
The place only fits about a dozen people. Smiles go a long way here, and so does a dollar.
“I'm going for value - I want people to get their money's worth,” says Rogge.
In this cash-only diner, $7 gets you country-fried steak, two eggs, home fries, and toast. You can also try the pork tenderloin sandwich with fries or The Jimbo, which is chopped steak, sautéed peppers, eggs, toast, potatoes, and soup or salad.
At Jeannie’s House, flash and trends take a back seat to good coffee and good conversation, and that's just fine with these folks.
“It's only been two months but we now more and more exactly what people want," says Rogge.
Jeannie's House is open daily for breakfast and lunch, until 2 p.m.
