UPDATE: Elkhart County business goes up in flames

An Elkhart County business owner spent his holiday weekend sifting through the ashes after his shop burned down late Sunday night.

It happened around 10:30 in the 23,000 block of U.S. 33 in Dunlap.

A portion of the road was blocked off for several hours as firefighters got the blaze at Dunlap CB’s and Electronics under control.

The business has been around for decades, but went up in flames in just minutes.

“There was people standing by somebody with their arms around them and they were just watching,” said Anne Lopez, who witnessed the event. “You could tell it was destroyed.”

The business owner was on the back porch when the fire broke out, but escaped unharmed.

Now his business is boarded up and his dreams are badly burnt.

“Obviously this has been in his life forever, that’s hard,” Lopez said. “Now he has to rebuild his livelihood.”

But first, the fire department has to sift through what’s left of the building as they try to determine the cause of the fire.

The owner suspects an electrical problem, but won’t know for sure until crews come back out to gather more evidence Tuesday.

No matter what the cause, neighbors say they’re glad the outcome wasn’t worse.

“At least it was not like he had a lot of customers in there and a busy time of day for him,” Lopez said. “That’s always a good thing when nobody gets hurt.”

The building’s been around for at least 50 years.

The owner tells NewsCenter 16 most of the fire was contained to one half of the building, but the other side has heavy smoke and water damage.
