Life is measured not by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away—this is the mantra of Young Survivors, a support network for pre-menopausal women battling breast cancer in Michiana. Young Survivors is a group of breast cancer survivors devoted to helping other women who face the challenges of breast cancer. Our mission is to empower women with knowledge through support and inspiration to help navigate them through their journey so they can get “back to life.”
No woman should have to face breast cancer alone. Even after treatment, breast cancer can be a long emotional battle. Having a support network of other women who have been where you’ve been can help you gain control of your life again. If you’ve been recently diagnosed with breast cancer or are at any stage of treatment, Young Survivors is here for you.
Young Survivors believes in the power of comfort. Emotional strength has a direct impact on your physical well-being. We’re not saying, ‘all you need is love,’ but we are saying that having friends who’ve shared your battle can make a big difference. At monthly meetings, breast cancer survivors and those battling breast cancer unite to share their experiences, issues, fears, questions, and perhaps most importantly, the good things that are happening in their lives.
The women who make up Young Survivors know that a fun, active lifestyle is one of the keys to emotional recovery after breast cancer. Young Survivors organizes community events throughout the year where women battling breast cancer and breast cancer survivors can stay active, have fun, and make a difference all at the same time. From luncheons to Notre Dame Women’s Basketball games to nights out on the town, we’re always searching for new and exciting ways to have fun, as well as raise money for organizations that provide resources and services for women battling breast cancer in Michiana.
Most recently, Young Survivors organized Survivor Boot Camp, an eight-week fitness program that encourages female breast cancer survivors to take charge of their health. Participants will enjoy a fun, safe and challenging variety of exercises to improve cardio-respiratory health, muscle tone, general well-being and increase energy. Classes will meet Saturday mornings from 11:00 to noon at The Fit Club in South Bend. Pre-registration is required.
